Bangladesh Maritime Law Society (BMLS) with Logistics Parnter, MCLaw Services Ltd. has conducted a Seminar on “Preventing Fraud in Maritime Trade and Commerce,” on May 12, 2024, at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka with The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network Bangladesh (MACN BD).
Our President, Mr. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, presented his keynote paper on Preventing Fraud in Maritime Trade and Commerce and discussed regarding maritime fraud with relevant case references and judgment, portraying the burning need for action to mitigate maritime fraud.
The Seminar begun with the openning speech of the Co-ordinator of BMLS, Ms. Shweata Mishra, Head of Chambers of MCLaw Services Ltd.
We were honored by the presence of the Honorable Chief Guest, Mr. Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, MP, Honorable Minister of State, Ministry of Shipping, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, whose participation added immense value to the seminar.
Special guests Rear Admiral A.S.M.A. Awal (Retd), ndc, psc, and Mr. Azam J. Chowdhury, further enriched the event with their invaluable insights and experiences.
The dignitaries on dias were Mr. Jonas Søberg Erlandsen, Senior Lead South Asia, Maritime Anti-Corruption Network; Ms. Shahamin S. Zaman, Executive Director, UN Global Compact Network Bangladesh; Commodore Syed Ariful Islam (BN, Retd) Maritime Anti-Corruption Network Bangladesh (MACN BD) Project Lead; Keynote Speaker Mr. Nesarul Hoque, Certified Credit Specialist, Mutual Trust Bank (MTB).
Many students and professionals from various sections and stakeholders of the industry attended the seminar. A scholarly discussion took place, with several questions and answers at the end of the seminar. That being said, the seminar was a catalyst to pave the way to eliminating maritime fraud and envisage the vested responsibility of the concerned personnel.

Our distinguished lineup of keynote speakers, including our President Mr. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir, Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, Dr. Mir Tareque Ali, Mr. Mohammad Mahburur Rahman, Commodore Syed Ariful Islam, and Mr. Sheridan Steiger, illuminated various facts of the Blue Economy, international collaboration, sustainable resource management, and the importance of legal frameworks.
Two engaging panel discussions were moderated by Rear Admiral Mohammad Khaled Iqbal and Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, focusing on the impact of national and international law in developing the Blue Economy and the role of the judiciary in supporting and developing the maritime industry respectively.
The esteemed panelists, Mr. Justice (Retd.) AFM Abdur Rahman, Mr. Md. Abdus Samad, Rear Admiral A S M Abdul Baten, Rear Admiral Golam Sadeq, Mr. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir, Capt. AKM Shafiqullah, Mr. Md Golam Sarwar, Mr. Syed Md. Bakhtiar, and Mr. Palash Bandyopadhyay, shared their profound insights, contributing to meaningful discussions.
The first panel emphasized the harmonization of national legal systems with sustainable blue economy principles. Ensuring consistency, enacting new legislation, and amending existing laws concerning the maritime sector were highlighted as crucial steps. Adaptive legal frameworks that account for industry evolution were emphasized.

The Seminar was held on July 10 2023 at Hotel Agrabad, Chattogram sponsored by Tysers, West of England, MCO- Marine Claim Office and supported technically by MCLaw Services Ltd. with National & International speakers, leading Ship-owners, Ship builders, Shipping lines, Ship agents, prominent Marine insurers, Academicians, and Maritime Lawyers. The event witnessed an overwhelming response from participants eager to delve into the world of maritime law.
BMLS recognized the need of bringing experts in marine insurance and ship owners and other stakeholders of maritime industry at the same platform to share their experience and exchange their ideas critical on Marine insurance issues and therefore, organized this highly informative and engaging International seminar.
The seminar was inaugurated by Commodore Md. Ziaul Haque, OSP, NDC, AFWC, PSC, BN, Managing Director of Bangladesh Shipping Corporation, who emphasized the importance of the seminar in creating awareness about the scope of the cover provided by Marine Insurance Policies. The special guest of the seminar, Mr. Sarwar Jahan, DMD of SR Shipping Ltd. and Mr. Md. Mehrul Karim, Chief Executive Officer of SR Shipping Ltd. addressed the various issues related to Marine Insurance briefly.
The seminar aimed to explore the challenges and discuss various issues regarding enhancing the knowledge of the stakeholders of the maritime industry related to the Law of Marine Insurance with special focus on marine insurance claims and scope of the coverage under various marine insurance policies.
Five renowned national and international experts presented their papers on marine insurance and other relevant topics and this operational part of the program was moderated by industry expert Mr. Chris Sydenham, Managing Director (Claims), Tysers.

3. Title: ‘Law as applicable to maritime and marine insurance claims in Bangladesh’.
Session Speakers: Mr. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir (Capt MAK).
The seminar was attended by about to 150 participants, including Bangladeshi ship owners, representatives from shipping companies, government officials, international experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and experts from various fields. The participants had the opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences, and network with industry peers.
Ms. Shweata Mishra, Head of Chambers of MCLaw Services Ltd. the technical partner of BMLS on behalf of organizing committee, expressed her gratitude to the esteemed Guests, Speakers, Delegates, Participants and all Sponsors for their contribution to the success of the seminar. As specialized in marine insurance, she brought up various issues altogether in a nutshell in her speech regarding marine insurance at a whole.

Our President and Head of Chambers, Mr. Mohiuddhin Abdul Kadir (Capt. MAK), Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh and Chairman of BMLS and Ms. Shweata Mishra, Advocate, Supreme Court of India and Coordinator of BMLS respectively participated in three days long Colloquium hosted by The Canadian Maritime Law Association where BMLS got CMI membership.
Congratulations to our President, Capt. MAK for his hard work to present BMLS in International arena for being elected as member state of CMI.
The Colloquium begun on June 14 2023 with various sessions including Judicial Sales IWG, Lex Maritima IWG, Offshore Activities IWG, Polar Shipping IWG, Mass IWG, Collision Convention IWG, Ratification Rotterdam Rules SC, Cybercrime IWG and Marine Insurance SC.
The operational part of the program was conducted on June 15 2023. The program started by the welcome speech of Dr. Ann Fenech, President of the Comité Maritime International, and Mr. Paul Harquail, of The Canadian Maritime Law Association followed by video message by Mr. Kitack Lim, Secretary-General of the IMO. Thereafter, a video speech by the Honorable Omar Alghabra, Minister of Transportation, Canada followed by Berlingieri Lecture by the Honorable Mr. Justice Sean J. Harrington, former judge, Federal Court of Canada.
Several panel discussion sessions were held on 15 June 2023. They are:

Second CMI Executive Council meeting and CMI General Assembly were also conducted on 16 June 2023 wherein name of BMLS was tabled by the CMI EX Co for membership and the General Assembly voted unanimously in favor of BMLS electing the Society to be the newest member of CMI family.
BMLS is profoundly grateful to the President of CMI Dr. Ann Fenech for her guidance and support and Executive Committee to consider BMLS for this membership.
CMI Membership of BMLS would provide its members with unique opportunity to contribute to the development of the maritime industry in Bangladesh and the world as a whole and to network with leading experts in the Maritime Sector.

Rear Admiral (retd) Md. Khurshed Alam, Secretary of the Maritime Affairs Unit, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, grace the workshop as the Chief Guest. His presence added immense value and highlighted the significance of maritime law in Bangladesh’s development and its role in the global maritime industry. Ambassador (Retd) Tariq A Karim, Director of the Center for Bay of Bengal Studies (IUB), join us as a Special Guest, contributing his expertise and insights to the discussions.
Prof. Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan, Adjunct Professor & Advisor, Department of Law, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) inaugurated the workshop.
Mr. Mohiuddin Abdul Kadir, President (Acting) of Bangladesh Maritime Law Society (BMLS) and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, delivered a captivating keynote speech on the topic of “Introduction to Admiralty Law and Maritime Claims.” His extensive legal knowledge and expertise provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the legal framework governing maritime disputes.
Ms. Shweata Mishra, Head of Chambers of MCLaw Services Ltd. and Advocate of the Supreme Court of India, conducts a practical session on “Introduction to Marine Insurance.” Participants were actively engaged in group activities, solving problem questions, and gaining valuable insights into the practical implementation of marine insurance in the maritime industry.
Commodore BN (Rtd) Syed Ariful Islam, former Director General of the Department of Shipping, Bangladesh, and Capt. A.K.M. Shafiqullah, also a former Director General of the Department of Shipping, Bangladesh, shared their expertise and practical knowledge on maritime affairs, focusing on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the legislative procedures of IMO and Maritime Labor Convention (MLC), 2006.
Dr. Assaduzzaman, Professor, Department of Law, Independent University Bangladesh gave a lecture about the Law of Carriage of Goods by Sea emphasizing international trade.
The workshop was designed to provide attendees with a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of maritime law and its practical applications. Distinguished speakers and industry experts shared their knowledge and insights, enriching the learning experience for all. Participants had the opportunity to enhance their understanding of crucial topics such as admiralty law, maritime claims, marine insurance, and more.
The Bangladesh Maritime Law Society organized a seminar, ‘Protection of Bangladeshi Ship Owners in the Global Maritime Environment,” on March 6, 2023, at the CIRDAP International Conference Center (CICC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The purpose of the conference was to address the issues Bangladeshi shipowners confront in the global maritime environment and develop ways to safeguard their interests.

AIAC Certificate in Adjudication is conducted by AIAC (formerly known as KLRCA) and is open to everyone, especially those in the construction industry. Aside from training future adjudicators and providing them with the necessary skills to conduct adjudication, programme is also suitable for those who do not want to become adjudicators but would just like to seek more knowledge on the subject. This programme is recognised by the CIPAA Regulations as a necessary qualification to be a CIPAA Adjudicator under CIPAA 2012. The training is conducted over five days by experts from the construction industry.
